Life Everlasting Episode 1 - Introduction to the Four Last Things

Limbo

Memento Mori (Remember your death)

State of Those Who Died Before Christ

  • Catechism paragraph Christ Descended into Hell  - CCC § 632-635
    • All dead, good or evil, before Christ share are in a similar state of soul or "place" (Hebrew Sheol or Greek Hades)
    • But the states of good and evil are not identical; refers to "place" of the righteous as the Bosom of Abraham
    • "The gospel was preached even to the dead." (1 Peter 4:6)
  • Other scripture re: Christ preaching to the dead:
For Christ also died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit; in which he went and preached to the spirits in prison, who formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water. (1 Peter 3:18-20)

Jesus' Descent into Hell - Brant Pitre on various interpretations of the text above.

  • What Is the Limbo of the Fathers? - Short answer by Fr. Charles Grondin
    • Early Jewish belief in Sheol - One "place" - all dead went there
    • Later Jewish belief in Sheol - Split into two "places" - righteous and the wicked were separated.
    • "Limbo of the Fathers" is one of the terms that has been used (along with "Abraham's bosom" [Luke 16:22]) for the "good part" of Sheol
